CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa, Japan(Oct. 2, 2003) -- Book series popular with today's youth involve characters such as Harry Potter, Babar and the Berenstain Bears, all of which are written by experienced authors educated on the principles of children's literature.

Gunnery Sgt. Raymond D. Davis is the company gunnery sergeant for Company A, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group. He has been a combat engineer during his entire Marine Corps career with the exception of drill instructor duty. His hobbies include customizing Harley Davidson motorcycles... and writing children's literature. He has no formal education on the matter.

Davis recently had one of his books selected for publishing by Publish America.

"Morals and Memories for Tomorrow: A Collection of Short Stories for Children Volume One" hit the shelves of online stores earlier this year. The book is Davis' first attempt at increasing children's reading comprehension.

"I wrote this book for my own kids," the Ocala, Fla. native recalled. "I was looking for something to read to my kids that involved more parent interaction. I found nothing of the sort so I decided to write my own book."

After six months of research on reading comprehension for children, Davis wrote the 50-page book in the span of 15 hours. Davis' eight short stories within the book pause in certain parts to ask the child questions. These questions are printed in bold, and through answering them, the child develops a better understanding of what they've read.

The book is also structured to give the child more than just a good grasp of what he or she is reading Davis explained.

"Each story within the book contains a moral for children to learn from," Davis said. "I thought that was one thing missing from other children's books was the lack of moral examples, most parents don't realize how important they are."

Davis submitted the book to Publish America in December of last year. Selected for print in February, it was as one of three books selected out of 400 submitted for printing.

The book is available for purchase through the publishing company's web site only. Some of the parents who have bought and read it with their children claim the $9.95 spent is worth it.

"The book is well thought through and contains interesting stories," said Jay W. Salyers, parent of two girls. "The kids loved it because they were able to interact with the book. When it was time for bed they wanted one more story before they went to sleep. I wish it were a longer book."

Davis has already finished his second book, scheduled to be published through Random House; his third is nearly finished as well. Each book in the series is larger, filled with more stories, and aimed at getting parents more involved with reading to their children.
