Not sure if this has been posted before

http://www.archive.org/details/WiththeMarinesatTarawa

It's an archive flim from 1944 shot during the invasion of Tarawa in 1943. It runs about 20 minutes and is in color, a rarity for its time. The main combat photographer was Louis Haywrd , who gave up a promising Hollywood career to serve his country.

If anyone has a taste for history, the website archive.org is filled with long lost films, articles and photos

I remember reading, a while back, that there was a huge debate wether to release the Tarawa Beachhead for public viewing. If memory serves me correct, the participants expressed their desire for the film to be shown. It certainly is not for the squeamish.
