MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif.(Oct. 1, 2003) -- For more than 60 years the United Services Organization has supported servicemembers around the globe by letting troops stateside and abroad know America appreciates their daily gallant efforts.
The San Diego USO will keep that tradition alive at this year's Miramar Air Show when Victoria Robertson, Miss USO, will launch the start of the Air Show by singing the National Anthem.
Robertson has sung the National Anthem for the Air Show four years in a row making this her fifth year.
"I'm very excited about singing at this year's Miramar Air Show," explained the 26-year-old Pennington, N.J., native. "This is one small way I can do something for the Marines and Sailors in the San Diego area."
As a USO employee, she has helped entertain troops at many Marine Corps Bases across the nation in addition to landing on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers while underway.
"My most memorable visit to the troops was when several of us entertainers flew out to the USS Lincoln and we performed in front of a captive audience of thousands of Marines and Sailors," explained Robertson with a huge grin. "After the show we were escorted up to the Control Deck and I was able to steer the ship for a brief moment. It was the most amazing experience to be able to steer this small city while floating in the ocean."
In between doing photo shoots for magazine and newspaper ads, she finds time to sing and play guitar in her band, Kitty Hipkiss.
"We perform in an array of venues and try to have fun doing so," said Robertson. "Kitty Hipkiss is my Nana's maiden name. I think her name sounds sexy and sweet, and if the band ever took off, her name would live on forever."
Robertson and her band have performed on station before at different functions to include Military Appreciation Day's "Salute to the Military."
"We had fun at the Military Appreciation Day celebration," explained the six-foot model. "I really enjoy singing to the Marines at Miramar."
When asked what inspired her to be a USO performer, she answered without hesitation referencing the movie Top Gun.
She then went on to say, "One night I was watching this old black and white movie with Marilyn Monroe performing for thousands of troops during World War II. The troops were so motivated and happy to see her. That really inspired me.
"Performing for the troops is my way of giving back to them for all of the sacrifices they have to endure," said Robertson. "Having the opportunity to fly to different U.S. bases around the world is a wonderful experience for me. It's my way of serving my country without actually having to join the military."
