Just look up MARSOC on the Marines website, and also check out wikipedia for some additional info. From my understanding all operators with Force Recon went to MARSOC or MSOB(Marine Special Operations Battalion).

There is most definitly force recon. When marsoc was first stood up they took guys from force so for a while force wasn't the same as it used to be, but it's slowly getting back to the way it was. But if you are really serious about doing special forces type stuff my advice is for you to go army and get into the rangers. From there you can go army SF and eventually CAG.

Am I sniffing glue or did a Marine just recommend the Army Rangers over MARSOC. I may be baised but I'd think a MARSOC CSO would be better than a Ranger any day of the Week

It's a more direct path than MARSOC certainly. Nothing to do with proficiency as an operator.

Rangers are like our brothers they do the same thing except in larger numbers.

I was initially told to join the National Guard because they have a SF Unit in my state. But to tell you the truth I want to earn the title MARINE first and foremost. Maybe after my intitial contract is over I'll switch over. My friend who's in there says they love Marines anyways. But i wanna be a Marine. I ship out in two weeks actually to San Francisco. I just wanna Know my options and whats out there because to tell you the truth becoming Force Recon would be Bad A#S

The differences between recon, force recon and MARSOC has been covered recently: http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100724

It's partially a matter of mission, and more a matter of who they work for. Yes, the higher level the commander that the reconaissance unit works for, the more likelyhood there is that direct action missions may be a focus.

Why are you shipping out to san fransisco? There are only 2 places that train Marines in this country and San Fransisco isnt one of them? I'm not personally Infantry or recon or anything combat related and I respect the fact that the one who are spend long periods of time away from their family and put themseves in danger everyday but why do all these civi's get on here talking about how awesome it would be to be recon or MARSOC. I personally blame Call of Duty for this one. I bet the one's talking about how awesome it would be to be a secret squirrl ninja would be the first ones soiling themselves when they step on the yellow footprints. I don't mean this to be rude but their are way to many people who are wannabe's on here. How about earning the title first.

SAN DIEGO, Sorry guys i just woke up when i typed that this morning. And yes i realize if i did indeed make it i wouldn't be repelling through windows with dual uzi's. I hear its alot of Humping over hill after hill with 100 plus pound packs. I've done my home work i just want to know the nature of the options i have. and if Recon or MARSOC is one of them i'd like to know more about them from someone other than a recruiter ya know. i dont even play call of duty

I like to challenge myself. Thats why i enlisted in the first place but if i got a shot at recon i'm sure i'd get more than what i bargained for. But thats probably what i'd want

lolololol a shot at recon, oh you guys are so funny.

No wonder recruiters aren't having a hard time making mission, they've got a bunch of retards who will enlist as whatever MOS they're told to.

How well can you swim...??? Humpin' a pack ain't all you'll have to do. I am not talking about recreational swimming either.

In speaking of that, what's the deal with first class swim qual? They said if you have Red Cross lifeguard certs and CPR/AED that you basically can get the qual?

Only thing is, they expired because it was a job when I was in high school, so wat do?

3rd Force Recon Co Mobile, Alabama Jan 87- March 89

Is that good enough for you? I believe that might been a bit before you were born or just thereafter. We had routine swims of 2 miles out of Dauphin Island.

No, like I said, 3rd Force Recon Co Mobile, Alabama. I know you are in the "Marine Corps of Why" so here is your link since you can't do any RECON for info yourself.

Did you go through ARS or BRC?

I never did attend anything except Scout Swimmer School and a couple of annual tours. One was to BFE West By God Virginia near Morgantown. Some nasty terrain in that part of the Applachians. Not quite as bad as what is at SERE when I went a couple of years back (Sept 2007) at Fairchild AFB. It was my time to go to college and I wasn't letting anything stand in the way of that because my entire time in AAVs I could never go. I ended up getting out of the unit because when I got to the university, we started having occasional drills that began on late Thursday night and did not end sometimes until Sunday evening. Most every drill weekend was Friday night until late Sunday afternoon at the shortest. That plays hell for the GPA when a test is on Monday morning. I still ended up with a 3.79 GPA which I am quite proud of and have even went beyond that in grad school and have a 4.0 currently.

I do not disagree with you when you say recon is better than ranger/ however everyone in army SF is SF with the exception of the support. while for some reason recon higher ups are hardly EVER recon/ im talking any officer and 1st sgt up unless they are a top or MGSGT/ there are a handfull of officers who actually went through BRC or ARS/ but not enough to make a big difference. It is so annoying to have an intel officer who runs a good pft try to micro manage a recon team who actually knows what they are doing, that is what a team leader is for. The best officer I ever had was actually not a recon Marine but was a Capt with 7 deployments under his belt (Capt Iverson) he gave us the mission told us where it was and when it needed to happen and left the planning to the people going on the mission.
