a ship you sailed on during her maiden voyage is being decommed.

I know the above is a squid site, but for better or worse their ships are built specifically for us (grunts). To either support us or get us there. Well, back in the day anyway.

The ship I lost my cherry on was the LST 1170, Windham County. When I looked her up, she had been sold to some foreign country ( don't remember who & when) and was apparently still sailing. It was back in Sept '58 that she took me and bunches of other Marines to Taiwan from Japan. Aahh, the memories of having to sleep topside on her deck. Seas were too rough to stay in a rack.

Yeppers, we are indeed getting old.

Dang! I was on 7 different boats, and the Nassau was the last one still going. She will probably be sold to Argentina or somewhere.

Man Bucksgt. you is old, I've probrably been shaving with the ships you were on for the last 20 years. You don't even have crossed rifles on your stripes.:)

Road the MSTS Gordon to Korea on 38th draft. Was not my most favorite ride. Mess did not have seats and we stood to eat our meals.

Going to Gitmo I drew a good billet when they sent me to the Nassua. The other 2 troop carriers were LST's and I really felt sorry for the guys on those flat bottom boats when we hit heavy weather. Besides being in new berthing and not having the stink some of those older LST's seemed to be permeated with.

Years were Aug '58 to Oct '59. I was with VMF(AW)314 - - the very first OFFICAL Black Knights. I was there again last night scrambling the hot pad. LMAO

Must've been on the Iwo. I was out on the NEW Iwo's maiden deployment. Been on the Nassau, Guam, Guadalcanal, and Ponce too. I think the Ponce is still around out of those four.

I made my trip there with VMF(AW)542, but I have forgotten exactly what year. I did drink a lot of plumb wine though. Even rode a water buffalo, but not for long.

We were the lab rats when this started. Was ****ing in a cup every other day wondering what they were looking for? Thought maybe it was a new method of short arm inspections.

Did a couple of Med floats on her....to include participating in the 50th Anniversary of D-Day off the coast of Normandy before we in-chopped the med in June of '94.

Here's a good site that gives some history about all of 'em. It seems to be hanging off a German domain name, but the info seems pretty accurate.

After getting out of the Marines, I was a paint supervisor at Ingalls and worked on LHA-3, 4 and 5. Damn, makes me feel old.
