A ground breadking ceremony for the National Museum of the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Heritage Center was held on September 26th, 2003. The design of the building is an abstract model of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. You can view pictures of the model here: www.usmcmuseum.org
Do you like the look of the new building and does it really reflect the flag rasing at Iwo Jima?

It is absolutely UGLY! I do not know who thought of it or even who approved it. I am sure there are some stellar Marines who were involved in the process, however it is just stupid. It looks nothing like the Flag Raising, they spent more money on a building to have that idiotic shape and there is TONS of wasted space that you can't use.
It looks stupid!!!

I WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF A Marine Corps Museum at MCB Quantico."Security Force"is correct;the Damn thing is UGLY.What happened to the Spiffy museum already in place at MCRD San Diego?Lets not let that go to pot because of a New Museum in Virginia.I have nice photos of the REAL Museum @ MCRD.As soon as I can get Wal-Mart to reprint them digitally I'll post them here. For the Aviation Buffs I'll post my Willow Run Airshow photos.I'm going to vote now, guess what box I'll check?

It takes a lot more then an abstract angle to depict the flag raising at Iwo. Besides, that theme has already been done with the Marine Corps Monument and done in a way that brings forth the essence of "Uncommon Valor" in the hearts and minds of all that see it.
The plans for the inside of the museum will present an interesting view of the Marine Corps, but I feel that the outside design goes begging.

When I 1st looked at it I didn't care for it at all, but after looking at it longer I discovered the "feeling" of the flag raising itself. I like it. Now I hope it is large enough to properly display our artifacts.

Its Different. After taking the virtual tour it looks like a pretty interesting place to visit. Any place that tells the history of our Marine Corps is o.k. by me

At first when I looked at it, I did not care for it very much. Then it on me. I live just 10 miles from the front gate at MCB Quantico. The front of the site doesn't look as big as they are depicting in the drawings, but as I looked at the rest of it I can see a well thought out plan. I am sure that with General Krulak involved the impeckable attention to detail was observed in ever aspect of desing and construction of the facility. I aggree with Dan_Mills though I only hope that there is enough room to properly display the hardware and the inplements of the Marine corps properly. A crowded museum would not go over very well with me at all.

Not justno.... but HE11 NO
1) It takes the HUMAN factor out. It is the ability of humans to go 'above and beyond' that makes the Marine Corps what it is, has been, and will be.
2) It looks TOO much like the CORVETTE Museum, in Bowling Green KY. We deserve something more Original, time honored, unique.
But.... that's just MY opinion !!

Definitely abstract. It resembles the Iwo Jima Flag Raising in form, but doesn't do it justice like The Sculpture in DC. I'd have to see more than the webpage to decide on love it vs. hate it.

At first I wasn't too sure if I liked it or not. It kind of grew on me. I also realize that we are into the 21st Century. We are allowed to mix old ideas with new ones. So why shouldn't the Marine Corps put something up that is modern. We will always have our traditions and heritage, nothing can change that.

You are right Red Dragon, about bringing in the "new" to the Corps. The 21st century has indeed arrived.
However, :) I believe that knowledge of a subjuct is necessary to bring the abstract to the concrete. In this case, someone not knowing about the Marine traditions and history would gain little, if anything from viewing an abstract angle of a roof line.
To the museum's credit however, I do believe that the displays inside will bring to life what the Marine Corps has been and remains to be today. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
(I'm not arguing my point of view.)
