This is a copy of the incoming (TTY)TELETYPE message from President Johnson passed through the Secretary of the Navy to All Naval bases and operations of which the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was part of.

This ALNAV "general message" was number /45 for the year. The DTG (date time group) included the numbers 272216Z/45 indicating the 27th day of the month, and 2216Z or GMT which for us at Camp Lejeune on Eastern Time the time was 5 hours earlier. The TOR or Time of Receipt (marked in cursive script at the top and typed at the bottom of the message) was 28/0130Z, or 8:30 in the evening.

JFK had been shot more than five days earlier, and this was the first communications from the new Commander in Chief, Lyndon B. Johnson
