The view from the top of the large hill (a small mountain) our Quonset hut was up against at Camp San Onofre. This North-easterly view overlooks a ridge line, 2,700 feet distant, beyond which further west and in the valley was the "firing range" (see map 4-pics back) between ridgelines. Further on, beyond the second ridgeline, 4,800 feet distant, is the San Onofre Canyon. The appearance back then was of a barren mountainous wasteland. It is a part of the Santa Margarita Mountains and a sub-part of the Sierra Nevada mountain chain.
