For more than 50 of Camp Pendleton’s patrons and community members, Marine Memorial Golf Course was home of the Commanding General’s 1st Invitational Golf Tournament Oct. 15.
Although the tournament was open to all, the purpose of this event was to provide recreational opportunities to Marines and sailors while socializing with the local community.
“This gives Camp Pendleton’s community a chance to see what our Marines and sailors do every day,” said Christina J. Chilleme, the special events manager for Marine Corps Community Services Camp Pendleton. “Participants will get a chance to see various types of military vehicles, weapons systems and tactical gear, while having a chance to interact with Marines personally and thank them for their service.”
Approximately 50 Marines were stationed among the 18 holes, with each group showcasing their job on display at each of the holes.
“Marine Corps Community Services Camp Pendleton is dedicated to enhancing the services and quality programs for our Marines and their families,” said Chief Warrant Officer Anthony I. Cisneros, the Marine Corps Community Services Officer for Camp Pendleton.
Most facilities among Camp Pendleton are dependent on revenue to stay open. Although most facilities are not open to the public, a select few are open for use by the community, such as the golf course, the Camp Pendleton Paintball Park, the Stepp Stables and more.
“We welcome our civilian friends to come and enjoy these things that are open to the public,” said Brig. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese, commanding general of MCB Camp Pendleton/Marine Corps Installations West. “By doing this we can allow our Marines and sailors to play golf at a very reduced cost.”
Overall the golf tournament provided a unique opportunity for the local community to meet some of Pendleton’s Marines as well as learn about their experiences while serving and delivered an outstanding recreational event for everyone.
