Marine Corps - USMC Community - MALS 39 makes a difference
  • MALS 39 makes a difference

Marines from Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 volunteer to assist with a cultivation project near Camp Pendleton’s Wire Mountain Housing area, Aug. 22.

The goal was for MALS 39 to assemble a team of volunteers to target certain areas on base in need of a clean-up. This initiative was intended to trigger the ownership and pride of belonging in Camp Pendleton’s military community.

“This is not only our way of giving back and showing pride in Camp Pendleton, but it also leans toward getting back to the basics like the commandant has been recent talking about,” said Sgt. Maj. William S. Slade, sergeant major of MALS 39.

For more than 2 hours Marines performed a variety of task some of which included weeding, trimming hedges, sweeping the roads and removing dust and debris from the visible areas.

“We took two hours out of our day and did a great thing without impacting our mission,” Slade said. “I hope this catches on. It’s everyone’s responsibility to make a difference.”

MALS 39 takes pride in their surroundings by maintaining the environment around them and setting a positive example for all Marines to emulate.

“We’re going to make a difference one Marine at time, one unit at a time and one road at a time,” said Slade.
